The raw cellulose material is dissolved in a chemical solution of sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) and carbon disulfide. This solution creates what is known as "viscose," which can be extruded into thin sheets.

Once the viscose solution is prepared, it is fed into the extrusion chamber of the cellophane machine. In this phase, the viscose is forced through a narrow die to form a continuous sheet of thin film. The thickness of the film can be controlled by adjusting the speed at which the viscose is extruded. As the solution exits the extruder, it still remains somewhat fragile, and further processing is needed to solidify and refine the material.

After extrusion, the wet viscose sheet passes through a bath or a series of baths containing chemicals that help regenerate the cellulose. The regeneration process involves soaking the extruded sheet in an alkaline solution (typically sodium hydroxide), which removes any remaining impurities and converts the viscose into solid cellulose. This step is essential for giving the film its characteristic transparency, flexibility, and strength.

The chemical bath also gives the film its biodegradable properties, ensuring that it can be safely broken down by natural processes when discarded.

After regeneration, the film is washed with water to remove any residual chemicals. This process is crucial in ensuring that the final product is safe and free from any unwanted residues that could affect the quality or safety of the packaged product. The washing process is typically followed by a neutralization stage, where the film is treated with a mild acid to neutralize any remaining alkali and stabilize the material.

Once neutralized, the cellophane film moves through a drying chamber where heat is applied to remove moisture. The drying process helps to ensure that the film retains its flexibility and transparency. During this stage, the film may also be stretched in a controlled manner to further refine its properties, such as enhancing its tensile strength or improving clarity.

The stretching process is carefully controlled, as excessive stretching can bring about thin or brittle films, while insufficient stretching may result in a material that is too thick or difficult to process.
